Education: a different look!!

“Literature is the mirror of real life.” One would indisputably agree with me in telling this so. Most of the time the literature in the world has brought umpteen numbers of changes in the world. There are many genres that can be brought under this vast ocean of literature. I consider movies as a powerful genre in this modern era of media that can bring an effective change in the minds of the people. Very often the movies are directed for commercial purposes to fill the coffer of the directors and producers. Nonetheless, we can in no way deny the fact there are very good movies that have brought changes in the world. We can of course number the movies that have their themes based on social transformation. Sadly though those movies don’t go on in the theatre more than a week or so, unless the fans of the particular star make it happen. One may wonder why all these about movies while talking about education. Dhoni- a recently released Tamil movie written and directed by Prakash Raj, who played the lead in the movie, has touched upon such an important topic with a hope of bringing a change in the educational system of our country today. This may be a topic well spoken for centuries yet practically speaking little change has taken place in this present educational system that can proudly be spoken of. I am not a pessimist to say so rather I am also voicing for the same change that the film had rightly put forward.
Over the centuries, great leaders of almost all the countries have felt the need for education that would shape the mind of the young ones and make them better instruments for bringing a  change in the world. The living legend Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa rightly said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” He certainly made this statement precisely because of the hope that he had in the power of education. That is very apparent in his own life and in the life of many great revolutionaries who have fought for freedom, peace, equality and justice. The education of their time had great impact on the minds of the students and but now that is not the case.
Many things have changed drastically in all spheres of life, specifically in the field of education. If the changes were to be positive and useful for the welfare of the younger generation we can welcome them happily, but the current changes in the field of  present education are mostly not for the welfare of the student community rather most of the educational institutions at the present time function as the money making machines of the money minded men and women, who exploit education for their vested interests. As a student having passed through the present educational system, it is with a hope of bringing a change that I am penning these words.
We are at the closure of the academic year 2011- 2012 and we have to accept the fact that in many institutions the admission for the next academic year began in the beginning of this academic year itself. As the public exams are in full swing, we can very well understand the efforts put in by the educational institutions- not to make the students study better rather to make them secure good marks and that in turn is not for making the students popular rather to make their institutions known to the world. If the educational institutions truly have the intention of shaping the students they must have shown it from the beginning of the student’s entry into the institutions, why is it happening only for preparing them for the public exam. Is it to really educate the students or to exploit them as mark scoring machines?
It is a real pity to note that most of our students who are formed in the educational institutions behave worse and I am a bit skeptical whether they truly are educated ones. Many a time, the immoral individuals, as it is evident in our country, are the educated ones who have got a ‘proper training’ in the ‘so called’ prestigious and popular educational institutions for they have not been trained properly. We can neither blame the students nor the parents for this miserable situation rather we need to question the core of our educational system. An ordinary student spends most of the time in the educational institutions at the early age when s/he is formed. The parents feel the need for educating their sons and daughters and make them good human beings who can become great leaders of tomorrow. They invest a huge amount of money on their children’s education yet they don’t experience the fruits of their effort. Martin Luther King, Jr said, “ The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” But our present education has failed tremendously to do its duty in forming persons who can think intensively and critically.
Today, in the era of cut- throat competition there is a growing need for efficient leaders for most of the leaders are, though they have high educational qualification, corrupt and they don’t have a value based life. The students who are educated in money making institutions often times have the same mentality, which they carry on during their career too. The aspect of value is very much lacking in our schools and it is pathetic to notice the sad situation of education which has to function as a main key to change. Unless there is a change in the educational system of our country, we cannot hope for a real change that would lead us towards a brighter and better future. Education today has become highly expensive and there is a growing fight over school admission, paying extra donations and spending thousands for coaching. Though the government has come up with the view of giving free and compulsory education for all, it remains a mere mirage for most of the underprivileged sections of our society today. The educational institutions have great mottos and vision statements in their calendars and they remain only there and they are not actually put into practice.
The scary reality is really threatening us enormously and if we need to bring a change in our country we need to have a different look at education. We need to focus on education as an instrument for forming the younger generation into good human beings who can create a better future for others. This can happen only when the educational institutions set an example for the students. Enough of earning money for these many years, at least for a few years the educational institutions can try their best to fulfill their vision statement what lies in the calendar. The young and energetic minds of the students are pregnant with powerful potentialities that can bring massive changes in the world. It is in the hands of the educational institutions to carve out the creativity of the students and make them creative citizens of the country who can truly become change makers through their value filled life.  Enough of using education for earning, may we now have a different look at education as a tool for emancipation which in turn would sensitize  the students to fight for justice, peace and equality in the country.

Pillars of Faith...!

PILLARS OF FAITH...!

In this year of faith, there have been various innovative initiatives by the Church to rediscover the core of our Christian life- of course our Christian Faith. In our world today, there is an emerging need for protecting and promoting faith in a more creative way not through mere words but through the deeds of the Gospel, which of course is not an easy task. If we really want to preach the Christian faith through our life, we should be ready to die to ourselves every moment of our life. For, following the footsteps of Christ is not a path of roses but rather it requires a lot of sacrifices, which is very much lacking among the Christians today. Christ offered Himself on the cross for all people so that everyone would know His Father’s glory. In this year of faith, as followers of Christ we need to offer ourselves in this world of many differences so that all people might come to know Christ through our lives. This is what precisely the Humble Servant of Christ is doing at the Vatican City. Yes, Pope Francis is preaching the Gospel through his life to all people. Surprised I was to hear from an atheist friend of mine that he likes the deeds of the present Pope to a great extent that he has been closely following the activities of the Pope. Obviously in this year of faith, the concrete example of Pope Francis is putting forth a big challenge to all those who dare to follow Christ. He is indeed a prophet to the modern world voicing for a real change. Ever since his election as the Head of the Catholic Church, he has been sharing his invaluable thoughts that inspire even an atheist. In his recent discourse to the Seminarians and Novices, Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of being joyful, authentic and transparent in order to become fruitful in our Christian life. He has rightly reiterated the various evils that are corrupting the minds of the consecrated people and has called for an encounter that would enable one to practice his/ her faith more meaningfully in this challenging world. The Pope`s discourse to the Seminarians and Novices in this year of faith is truly a blessing for the Church. For, the present Seminarians and Novices are the future leaders of the Church and so they need to be the pillars of faith. Being a pillar of faith is not an easy task in this glamorous world but it is a possible task. The discourse of the Pope is not only to the Seminarians and Novices but rather it is an invitation for all Christians who want to follow Christ to become more joyful, more authentic and more transparent in life. When we become joyful, authentic and transparent, certainly our Christian life will become more fruitful and all of us could become the pillars of faith. As our Holy Father has rightly said true joy, authenticity and transparency don’t come from things that we possess but rather they are born from the “encounter.” It is truly right that we ask ourselves in this year of faith, “Where do we have our encounter?” Is it with things that are going to perish or with Christ, the imperishable master, who could lead us in Faith and make us pillars of faith? If we encounter Christ at every moment of our life, we could very well radiate joy, authenticity and transparency in life and make our Christian life more fruitful. When that happens we could certainly become the strong pillars of faith on whom our Mother Church could count on!

Is Humanity Dead…? - G.S. Thayriam.

Is Humanity Dead…?
Every day as I flip through the pages of various news papers, I am shattered seeing the raw reality that is haunting us more and more now than yesteryears. The more human beings become educated; less humane they become. Yes, it is very obvious that most of the continuous crimes occurring in our nation today are precisely because of those educated in power. Various crimes done to the innocent masses more particularly to the women and children all over the nation have been constantly disturbing me and made me question, “Is Humanity Dead..?” Many young citizens of this nation who are fed up with the present political scenario would undoubtedly raise the same question, “Is Humanity Dead..?” Committing various crimes against the innocent ones yet not feeling guilty for their grievous mistakes have become a common phenomenon in this democratic nation. The recent comments of a prominent political person, who openly said that he had done the right thing to stop riots, made me question, how come those many innocent citizens lost their lives in the riots if he had done the right thing? Is the mass killing a right thing according to him? When the whole nation is aware of what happened in 2002, there is ONE who doesn’t feel guilty for what happened and it is an open proclamation in the media. Sadly though we the citizens of this democratic nation support such a political figure and dare not question the evil doings of those in power. More sad I am to know that there are political moves to bring him to the top of the political ladder. Knowing well that humanity is brutalized in front of our eyes, we become just eye witnesses and never do we take an effort to fight against such inhuman deeds. Even if some attempt to fight for justice, they are cruelly dealt with by those who have money and muscle power. With all these disturbing thoughts floating in my mind, I was journeying in a bus with the same question, “Is Humanity dead..? Why do human beings forget to realize the importance of being humane towards the other?” The conversations that took place in the crowded bus in TN made me realize the fact that the humanity is DEAD among those educated in Power and certainly NOT among those ordinary citizens of this nation. It was a beautiful evening. In that old government bus, there were young men and women busy texting messages in their mobiles, some middle aged men and women were busy protecting their things but there were also some elderly women who were feeling for another woman who had lost her thirty thousand rupees in the crowded bus stand at Tanjure. Soon many others started expressing their feelings for the one who lost her money. They were ordinary women who had no formal education and they don’t know to speak in fluent tongues. Yet I could see humanity very much active and alive among them. They were there feeling for one whom they don’t even know or haven’t even seen. Yet they were united as human beings. The sympathy of the elderly women made me re-think my previous opinion on the death of humanity. I came to the realization that humanity is not dead but rather very much active among the ordinary citizens of this nation living in the real Bharath that is still dark and dirty and not among those living in posh bungalows and in shining houses. Those in power will never have an iota of feeling towards the suffering people but might express in affluent words that they feel for the suffering ones. They cannot feel for the innocent ones mainly because they don’t realize the worth of being humane. Yes, for those filthy and fickle- minded politicians, who play dirty politics in our nation today, human beings are just vote banks and once the election is over they forget those who elevated them in their political ladder. The power hungry politicians concentrate more on their political prosperity and certainly not on the prosperity of the nation and her people. They forget to do the right thing at the right time and when all is done and gone they claim that they did the right thing. The politicians need to learn more from the ordinary citizens, who feel for one another irrespective of their caste, colour, creed and culture. Undoubtedly, those who falsely proclaim “India Is Shining” need to look at the raw reality in the real Bharath- the rural villages of India and learn from those ordinary and uneducated ones the lessons for life- to be more humane and keep humanity more alive and active. Can our ‘so-called’ political heroes come down to the real Bharath and see the reality? If that happens so, our politicians will be more conscious of what they think, speak and do instead of speaking anything in the air. When they realize the worth of humanity, they would become aware of their grievous mistakes and feel guilty for what they committed. And never will they falsely utter that they did the right thing, when the whole nation knows what went wrong!
